| What is the 01X? |
Yamaha has developed a completely
new concept with the 01x. The 01x is in effect several devices
built into one:
- 8 Channel 24 Bit 96 kHz A/D Converter
- 28 Channel digital mixer
- Full functional remote controller for all popular audio
workstation software
- 24 channel audio interface for Windows and Macintosh
- 32 Channel MIDI interface for Windows and Macintosh.
|
| Is the 01X a hard disk recording
system? |
Not in the sense that it will
work as a stand-alone HDD system like the Yamaha AW series,
however, when used with a computer, the power is truly immense. |
| What else do I need to produce
music with the computer and the 01x? |
A MIDI keyboard is the only
other thing you may need. You do not need an A/D converter,
no soundcard, no mixer, no MIDI interface and no controller
– as the 01X replaces all these devices. |
| How many analogue input
channels can I record simultaneously through the 01x into the
computer? |
You can record up to 24 tracks
simultaneously at 24-bit 44.1K/48K (16 tracks at 96,if you have
the 01X connected up with two additional mLAN i/o boxes), These
mLAN I/O units can be from any mLAN manufacturer, not just Yamaha. |
| How do I connect the 01x
with my computer? |
This is where Yamaha´s
mLAN technology comes in: You just need a standard FireWire
cable and a standard FireWire port on your computer to connect
it to the 01x. Most laptops and desktops nowadays have FireWire
ports, if not - it is no problem to upgrade your computer
with any OHCI* (Open Host Controller Interface) FireWire card
at a reasonable price.
*OHCI standards were created by software
and hardware industry leaders--including Microsoft, Apple,
Compaq, Intel, Sun Microsystems, National Semiconductor, and
Texas |
| Why does the mLAN Driver
consume high CPU power; not just when playing back with all
audio channels connected, but even when no application is active
or running? |
Please see the manual for
the recommended system requirements for a PC. You can reduce
CPU load by decreasing the number of Audio Channels in the
Auto Connector setting. Setting latency higher can also reduce
CPU load. Yamaha is aware of this issue and hope to announce
fixes to this soon, |
| Does the 01X support Hyper
Threading? |
No. If the problem happens with
DAW, which supports Hyper Threading, please set Hyper Threading
to Disable. Yamaha is checking the Hyper Threading issue. The
issue is that in some cases Blue Screen errors can occur. if
you find this, please turn off HT. Again Yamaha is aware of
this, and will release an update soon. |
| CPU overload with PitchFix
running on Cubase SX 2.0. |
Yamaha has now corrected this.
Please get the latest update from Yamahasynth.com |
| Does the 01X support AMD
CPU chip? |
Yes. AMD processors work fine
with the 01x. Some issues and compatibility with certain chipsets
is under investigation, and Yamaha will announce an updated
list of compatible chipsets and motherboards soon. |
| Does the 01X support Multi
port mode? |
No. The mLAN driver doesn't
support "multi port multi channel" WDM. This is
a limitation with WDM and our plans with mLAN networking which
cannot be addressed, due to the fundamental architecture of
WDM, |
| Distorted sound may occur
with Sonar 2.2 and 3 on ASIO mode. |
Get the Sonar
3.1 update and ASIO now works. |
| Distorted sound may occur
with Wave Lab4 on ASIO mode. |
When running Cubase SX and
WaveLab 4 simultaneously, please use "WDM + ASIO"
mode. When using only WaveLab 4, please use WDM mode. This
will be fixed in February 2004. |
| Can channel names be displayed
"Physical port name" on DAW software? |
No. mLAN Driver displays
only "generic channel number" for supporting network
connection. |
| Hibernation is not working
while the mLAN driver is ON. |
This is now fixed with the
latest driver, which can be downloaded from Yamahasynth.com. |
| Ground loop noise occurs. |
Electricity systems vary
from country to country. Typically this is not an issue in
the U.S. Some European countries may experience noise when
connecting the 01X to a 3-pin earth connection for the computer
(powered or active speakers and musical instruments). Noise
may occur or may be recorded to an audio sequencer. The noise
may differ in characteristics or degree depending on the power
sources or grounding scheme of the connected devices as well
as the specifications of the analog audio input/output. |
| Driver version number seems
to be old. |
This was fixed in the latest
01X driver. |
| What about the 01X's mLAN
networking capability? |
Currently, there is no mLAN
patchbay so you cannot connect other mLAN gear. However,
older products need to be updated to connect with the 01X
and those updates are not yet available. There are plans for
first generation products (like the Presonus Firestation)
to be updated. By March, Yamaha will release a new mLAN patch
bay application for connecting all these mLAN products together.
You will be able to download the patchbay from the web and
then the 01X will have full mLAN networking capability. |

| What software can I control
with the 01x? |
At the moment Yamaha´s
01x supports Cubase (SX/SL), Nuendo (version 1.61 and higher),
Logic (Platinum 5.3 and higher), Digital Performer (3.1 and
higher( and Sonar (2.2 and higher). However, as new applications
are developed with Mackie control support it may be possible
to support others such as Cool Edit Pro, Samplitude and others. |
| How many channels can I
control for example in my sequencer software or DAW software
with the 01x? |
The number of channels just
depends on your software. The 01x can control any number of
channels played back by your software. |
| What are the differences
between the 01x and controllers of other companies? |
The uniqueness of the 01x is
that it offers a complete solution for every working environment
– it is not only a controller, but also a converter, a
mixer a MIDI interface, and an audio card. And you can use it
with most of the popular DAW software, while the integration
works as well or even better as controller especially designed
for certain DAWs. |
| |
| Can I use the 01x as a stand-alone digital mixer? |
You can use the 01x as a stand-alone mixer without any problem – live and in the studio. |
| What does the 01x offer
as a digital mixer? |
With the 01x you have 28 channels
of digital mixing. On each channel you will find a 4 band EQ,
full dynamics processing and two internal effects processors
which can be insert or send type effects for the many built
in effects, a total of 4 aux sends and much more. |
| Is there a limit to the
power of the DSP effects? |
The internal effects processors
can work as send effects across every channel (you have 2 effect
processors in total). The dynamics processing and EQ processing
works on every channel, so in that sense, no, there is no limit
on the DSP. |
| To which effects processors
can I compare the internal effects of the 01x? |
We use the same DSPs as in our
bigger mixing consoles. So the quality of the effects can for
example be compared with Yamaha´s 01V96. |
| Can I save my mixer settings? |
Yes. The 01x might be the cheapest
total recall mixer on the market. You can save up to 99 "scenes"
and recall them at any time. |
| What routing does the 01x
offer? |
The 01x has 24 direct mlan outs
(these can be fed directly to your PC using the single firewire
cable mentioned earlier), and offers very flexible routing options.
In addition the 01x has 4 fader and 4 mute groups and the option
to pair mono channels to a stereo channel. You can also route
the 24 audio inputs to 8 mLAN recording streams or any number
up to this, in the internal patchbay utility, making it very
flexible for routing of audio to your software. |
| Can I use the send effects
also as inserts? |
Yes. The flexible routing of
the 01x allows for any DSP process to be used as an insert effect
instead of using it as a send effect. |
| Can I save my mixer settings
externally? |
Again - yes. Yamaha´s
studio manager software allows you to control and save your 01x
settings from your computer. And Yamaha offers with the channel
module a VST Plug-In that communicates with the 01x. This way
you can export your 01x settings into the Plug-In and the other
way round. There has never been a better integration of the
software and the hardware world! |
| Is it possible to mix audio
tracks from my sequencer externally with the 01x? |
Yes, you can send up to 16 channels
of audio out of the computer into the 01x to mix them externally.
This way you can use the high quality DSP effects, dynamics
and mixing of the 01x without worrying about your CPU power. |
| |
| How high is he resolution/sample
rate used for converting analog signals? |
Like all up to date digital
mixers the 01x uses 24 Bit / 96 kHz AD/DA converters. Internally
the 01x effect processors work with a resolution of 32 Bit (58-bit
accumulator) floating point for the best results, and maximum
overhead when using the internal DSPs. |
| Do I have phantom power
for my inputs? |
Yes. The 01x offer 8 balanced
inputs, two with XLR jacks and phantom power. All inputs have
mic preamps, so when using adaptors you can connect up to 8
microphones. |
| Can I connect my electric
guitar to the 01x? |
Yes, the 01x offers a dedicated
Hi-Z input for guitars. |
| What about adding more inputs
to the 01x? |
This is also possible by using
a converter that supports mLAN and connecting it to the 01x
with a standard FireWire cable. There are over 50 manufacturers
that support mLAN. So you can add for example an Apogee or PreSonus
converter to the 01x. You can add up to 16 channels via mLAN. |
| |
| What is the latency of the
audio drivers? |
Yamaha is working hard towards
achieving the lowest latency possible with the 01X, and is aiming
by release to be sub 10ms on all platforms. This latency only
becomes an issue when playing VST instruments live. As the 01x
is a fully working digital mixer you can do the monitoring with
the 01x including the 32 Bit effects. This way you do not have
to worry about latency when working with a computer –
another advantage of the 01x! |
